Should Google Messages chat themes be available on my phone?
Chat themes let you set colors and a custom or preset wallpaper for an individual Google Messages conversation. Google now documents the feature in Messages Help and says the customization is visible only to you.
Current verdict
With an updated Google Messages app and RCS chats enabled, Chat theme should be available. If the old “Change colors” control is present but wallpapers are missing, that can be a rollout-version gap rather than a phone hardware limit.

Open a conversation, tap the recipient or group name — or the ⋮ menu — then choose Chat theme. You can select a color palette, choose your own photo or use a preset wallpaper and apply the result.
Who sees the theme
Google’s Help page is explicit: chat-theme changes are visible only to you. Changing the wallpaper does not change the other person’s copy of the conversation.
RCS and app version matter
Google’s rollout announcement notes that RCS must be turned on. If Chat theme is absent, update Google Messages and verify that RCS chats are enabled before assuming your phone model is excluded.
Why older advice may say only colors are supported
Google Messages previously exposed color customization before full wallpapers. Search results and forum answers from earlier in 2026 can therefore describe a partially outdated interface. Prefer current Google Help for the live menu path.
